देवदासी। हम सभी ने ये नाम तो सुना ही होगा। किसी ने कहानी में तो किसी ने फिल्म में। देवदासी यानी देवों की वे कथित दासियां जिन्हें धर्म के नाम पर सेक्स स्लेव बनाकर रखते हैं। उम्र ढलते ही भीख मांगने के लिए छोड़ दिया जाता है। चौंकिए मत। ये प्रथा राजा-महाराजाओं के समय की बात नहीं, आज का भी सच है।

देवदासियों का गढ़ यानी बेंगलुरु से तकरीबन 400 किलोमीटर दूर स्थित उत्तरी कर्नाटक का जिला कोप्पल। पूर्णिमा की रात और चांद की रोशनी से नहाया हुलगेम्मा देवी का मंदिर भक्तों से खचाखच भरा है। हुदो, हुदो...श्लोक चारों ओर हवा में तैर रहे हैं। इस श्लोक का उच्चारण करने वाली हर तीसरी महिला के गले में सफेद और लाल मोतियों की माला यानी मणिमाला है। हाथों में हरे रंग की चूड़ियां और चांदी के पतले कंगन हैं।
वे दीये जला रही हैं। उनके हाथ में बांस की एक टोकरी है। जिसे यहां के लोग पडलगी कहते हैं। इसमें हल्दी-कुमकुम, अनाज, सब्जी, धूप, अगरबत्ती, सुपारी, पान पत्ता, केला और दक्षिणा रखी है। वे देवी मां को पडलगी में रखे सामान अर्पित कर रही हैं। मंदिर में मौजूद बाकी लोगों से इनकी पहचान अलग है। वहां मौजूद एक शख्स से पूछने पर पता चलता है कि ये महिलाएं देवदासी हैं।
इन्हें पूर्णिमा की रात का खास इंतजार होता है। अपनी देवी को खुश करने के लिए वे इस मंदिर में आती हैं।
मंदिर में इधर-उधर नजर दौड़ाई। 22 साल की बसम्मा मंदिर में आराधना कर रही हैं। पूछने पर कहती हैं- तीन साल पहले देवदासी बनी हूं। माता-पिता ने बुढ़ापे के सहारे की वजह से देवदासी बना दिया। तब से यहीं भीख मांगकर गुजर-बसर कर रही हूं।
यहां से तकरीबन 15 किलोमीटर चलने पर मिलता है विजयनगर जिले का उक्करकेरी गांव। इसे देवदासियों का गढ़ कहते हैं। संकरी गलियों से होते हुए मैं देवदासी लक्ष्मी के घर पहुंची। पांव पसारने की जगह जितनी झोपड़ी, जहां वह अपने पांच बच्चों के साथ रहती हैं। नहाना, खाना और सोना सब कुछ उसी झोपड़ी में। जमीन में छोटा सा गड्ढा खोदकर चटनी पीसने का जुगाड़ कर रखा है।
लक्ष्मी की बेटी जया कहती हैं, 'एक बार जोर से बारिश आ जाए, तो झोपड़ी में पानी घुस आता है। क्या खाएं, कहां रहें समझ नहीं आता। आप ही बताइए हम मर जाएं क्या…
आंखों में आंसू भरे जया कहती हैं, ’हमारा तो ये हाल है कि अपने पिता का नाम भी नहीं पता है। जिन्हें अगर पता भी है, वो डर के मारे नाम नहीं लेगा, क्योंकि वो पिता या तो कोई पंडित है या गांव का मुखिया या फिर कोई दबंग। जिसने किसी सामान की तरह मां को भोगा और जब मन भर गया तो छोड़ दिया।’

यहां से आगे बढ़ी, तो हल्के हरे रंग की साड़ी में घर के बाहर बैठी मिलीं उल्लीम्मा। उम्र तकरीबन 50 साल। कहती हैं- हम 6 बहनें थीं। दो को माता-पिता ने देवदासी बना दिया और चार की शादी कर दी थी। मेरा पुरोहित तीन साल तक साथ रहा। उससे मुझे दो बच्चे हुए। उसके बाद उसने मुझे छोड़ दिया।
मैंने गुजारा कैसे किया है, मैं ही जानती हूं। जंगल से 50-50 किलो लकड़ी लेकर आती थी। उनके बंडल बनाती और शहर जाकर बेचती। एक दिन के ज्यादा से ज्यादा दस रुपए ही मिलते थे।
कई बार तो बच्चे भूखे ही रह जाते थे। भीख मांगकर गुजारा करना पड़ा। देवदासी होने की वजह से जो कष्ट मुझे मिला, वो किसी औरत को न मिले। इस धरती का सबसे बड़ा श्राप देवदासी होना है।
उल्लीम्मा कहती हैं- कहने को तो देवदासी घर की मुखिया होती हैं, वह घर का लड़का होती है, लेकिन हकीकत ये है कि हम देवदासियां शूद्र हैं। ऊंची जाति के मर्द हमारे साथ जब तक चाहें संबंध बनाते हैं। एक बार हम प्रेग्नेंट हुए कि दोबारा वे अपनी शक्ल नहीं दिखाते हैं। यहां तक कि अपने बच्चों को देखने भी नहीं आते।
उल्लीम्मा कहती हैं कि हमारी किस्मत खराब है, हम इसे शोषण भी नहीं कह सकते, क्योंकि धर्म के नाम पर देवदासी को अपने पुरोहित के साथ रहना ही है।

जब शादीशुदा बहनें घर आती हैं तो उनकी बहुत खातिरदारी होती है। उन्हें चूड़ी, पायल और कपड़े दिए जाते हैं। हमें तो बस इसी चारदीवारी में रहना होता है। न कहीं आना न जाना। कई बार मैं दूसरों को जोड़ियों में देखकर बहुत दुखी हो जाती हूं।
इसी गांव की 65 साल की पार्वती कहती हैं कि दस साल की उम्र में ही मुझे देवदासी बना दिया गया। मेरे पुरोहित से मुझे दो बेटियां और एक बेटा पैदा हुआ। बड़ा होने के बाद बेटा मुझे छोड़कर चला गया। दोनों बेटियों की किसी तरह से मैंने शादी की। अब इस घर में अकेली रहती हूं।
पुरोहित से कभी किसी तरह की आर्थिक मदद नहीं मिली। वह मेरी ही कमाई से ऐश करके चला जाता था। मैं अपने गुजारे के लिए या तो सब्जी बेचा करती थी या खेत में मजदूरी करती थी। बच्चों की पैदाइश से लेकर उनकी शादियों तक का खर्च मैंने उठाया है।
जब पुरोहित की मौत हुई, तो मैं उनके घर गई थी। उसके परिवार ने मुझे घर में नहीं घुसने दिया।

Undertrial rape accused molests doctor inside Mandoli jail, case lodged: Delhi Police

An undertrial prisoner allegedly molested a junior resident doctor at Mandoli jail here and also tried to rape her, police said on Tuesday. The incident took place on Monday when the doctor was conducting a regular check up of all the inmates, they said.
The accused hid himself in the bathroom and later allegedly molested her. He even tried to rape her. But the doctor raised an alarm and alerted the security staff. She managed to push him away and ran outside, a senior police officer said.
